Over the years, I worked as School Based Counsellor and as Rural Itinerant School Counsellor at the following schools: Lydia Lois Beardy Memorial School, John Field Elementary School, Kitwanga Elementary School, and New Hazelton Elementary School. In addition, I worked as external family mental health counsellor accepting referrals from school counsellors for specific areas of specialized treatment such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Suicide Prevention, and Family counselling.
In addition, I worked as a subcontractor for the Forensic Youth Psychiatric Services Division of the Ministry of Child and Family Services.
The services provided to Children and Youth and their Families encompassed the following neurosis based areas: Substance abuse and addictions, Anger management, Panic and Anxiety, Appearance and self-image, Assertiveness, ADD/ADHD, Bereavement, Concentration, Depression, Disability, Drugs, Eating problems, FASD, HIV & AIDS, Homesickness, Insomnia, Loneliness, NSSI (Non-Suicidal Self-Injury), Pregnancies, Parental separation, Phobias, PTSD, Procrastination, Rape, Relationship, Residential School Trauma, Racism, Self-esteem, Sex and sexuality, Stress, Suicidal prevention, and Trauma rehabilitation.
In addition, I was instrumental in identifying and addressing varied conditions of Psychosis in Youth working in close collaboration with Doctors, Psychologists, and Psychiatrists.
Addressing the needs of students and their families was achieved while working in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team made of teachers, school administrators, and including a variety of other professionals such as special education teachers, speech therapists, school psychologists, social workers and public health nurses.
